Gratitude & Ministry Sunday
Dear Friends,
On Sunday there will be snakes.
I should clarify, because it’s Ministry and Gratitude Sunday, and I really, really want you to come to church this week – like even an extra amount more than usual. So, to be clear, there will not be live snakes in the Great Hall (there may or may not be a rubber snake for the Children’s Sermon).
The snakes have to do with a story from the Old Testament about the nehushtan, which is one of my favorite Biblical stories. More importantly, it was also one of Jesus’ favorite stories. And we know this because he used it in order to explain his mission to the world.
And since Jesus used it as the perfect story to make sense of what he was doing, we’ll use it to make sense of what Christ is doing here at St. Andrew’s. It's good sometimes to take a step back and say: “This is what God is doing. This is how God works.” It fills us with gratitude, primes us to experience God’s grace and love, and pours excitement into our work. That’s the purpose of Ministry and Gratitude Sunday, so that at the very outset of the capital campaign we remember that the most important thing about what we are doing is being a part of what God is doing. Snakes and all. Come and be a part.
See you Sunday,
Fr. Andrew
