We Belong to Christ
Preacher: The Rev. Andrew Van Kirk
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
We are always tempted to anchor our identity in people – leaders we admire, voices we trust, even loved ones we cherish. It’s understandable. People reflect something of God. We’re made in his image. But the image is not the same as the source.
When we give a person first place in our hearts, it feels almost right. That’s what makes it dangerous. Whether it’s a political figure, a spiritual mentor, or someone close to home, our allegiance can shift from trust in Christ to trust in them. And in doing so, we surrender not only our loyalty but our discernment.
Paul’s words to the Corinthians challenge us to return to the cross. Not to personalities. Not to factions. Not to human-shaped gods – but to the God who became human for our sake. Christ is not just another name on the list. He is the list.
The power of the cross is real. And it sets us free from every smaller allegiance.
Reflection Questions
Where are you tempted to place your trust in a person instead of in Christ?
How have you experienced the pull of personal partisanship – whether in politics, faith, or relationships?
What makes it feel so natural to say “I belong to…” someone other than Jesus?
How does the cross reorient your loyalties and reshape your sense of identity?
Where is God inviting you to ask deeper questions? Not: “What does this person want?” But: “Is it good? Is it true? Is it Christlike?”
