What does it mean to trust God?

  • Preacher: Tim Jenkins

  • Passage: 1 Samuel 8:4-20; 11:14-15

The Israelites had a trust problem. Even after all that God had done for them—delivering them from Egypt, leading them into the Promised Land, raising up leaders when they needed them—they still wanted a king. They wanted something visible, something secure. They wanted to hold back part of themselves rather than fully relying on God.

We do the same thing. Trusting God is not just about believing—it’s about surrendering. It’s about giving over not just our fears but also our desires, our plans, and the parts of our lives we would rather keep control over. The question is not just do you trust God exists? but do you trust that his ways are better than yours?

Jesus calls us to give all of ourselves to receive all of him. That’s not just a future reward—it’s a better life today. God’s way is not just right; it is good. The challenge is to daily examine where we are holding back and let go, trusting that God’s will is always worth it.
