Your Part with Christ
Preacher: The Rev. Andrew Van Kirk
Scripture: John 21:1-19
The risen Christ appeared on the shore. But the disciples didn’t know it was him. Not at first. They were too busy fishing, too exhausted, too unsuccessful—until he told them to cast the net one more time. When the net overflowed, John was the first to see it: It is the Lord. Peter was the first to act—leaping into the water to meet Jesus. The rest? They rowed the boat.
This post-resurrection story gives us a picture of what Christian life looks like after Easter. It’s not always filled with lightning-bolt moments. Most days aren’t miracles. Most days are rowing.
Some of us are like John—able to recognize the movement of God before others do. Some are like Peter—leaping with impulsive, generous action. But most of us, most of the time, are like the other five disciples—pulling oars, getting sweaty, doing the work that brings the whole community to shore.
And Jesus needs all of them. All of us. The spiritual visionaries, the doers, the faithful rowers. Each one helps bring the Church to the place where Jesus is already waiting with a fire and a meal.
Whatever part you play—seeing, leaping, or rowing—you’re helping bring the Church toward Jesus. And he welcomes you to the feast.
