Instructed Eucharist Sunday

Dear Friends,

It’s probably true that for any sufficiently significant area of human endeavor and practice, there’s an effectively inexhaustible supply of potential things to learn. For example, college football is about to start this weekend. This means my neighbor is about to wow me for the next four months with an amazing number of college football facts. He’s inexhaustible; astonishing, really.

This weekend is not just the start of college football. It is also our annual Instructed Eucharist Sunday. At this special service we make an effort, both in our printed bulletin and by stopping occasionally during the service to call something out, to dig up some of the inexhaustible wisdom of the ages about how human beings worship God.

If you’re coming from another tradition, I want to especially commend this service. There can be a lot of unfamiliar and unexplained parts and practices of an Anglican worship service, but none of them are unreasoned or unexamined. We’ll try and shed some light on them. But even if you’ve been to every single Instructed Eucharist that we’ve ever done, I bet you’ll learn something new Sunday. The well is deep; there is yet more wisdom and experience to drink.

And, unlike college football facts, this knowledge will enrich your life even after bowl season is over. Better understanding the “why” of worship helps us draw ever closer to the object of our worship, our one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
